Interesting Facts

San Antonio holds more surprises than most people realize — here are a few you probably haven't heard before:

  • Underground rivers run beneath it: The Edwards Aquifer, which feeds San Antonio's water supply, is one of the most productive artesian aquifer systems in the world — water pressure is sometimes high enough that wells historically flowed freely without any pumping at all.
  • It once had a different name: Before Spanish colonizers arrived, the area was called Yanaguana by the Payaya people, meaning "refreshing waters." The name San Antonio came from a 1691 expedition that arrived on the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua.
  • The River Walk sits below street level by design: After a catastrophic 1921 flood killed dozens of residents, engineers proposed burying the river entirely. Architect Robert Hugman successfully argued instead for a below-grade pedestrian promenade — the result became one of the most visited tourist destinations in the United States.
  • It was the largest city in Texas for decades: San Antonio held that distinction well into the 20th century, only being surpassed by Houston as Texas's oil economy boomed after World War II.
  • Chili con carne was popularized here: The city's famous Chili Queens — women who sold chili from open-air stands on Military Plaza beginning in the 1860s — helped spread the dish across the country, influencing what many Americans consider a quintessential Tex-Mex staple.

The San Antonio River Walk stands as one of Texas's most enchanting destinations, drawing millions of visitors each year to its winding network of stone pathways, arched bridges, and lush cypress-lined banks.

Secret Little Hack

Skip the Riverwalk Crowds by Going Underground — Literally

Most visitors never realize that the San Antonio River has a second, quieter level. The Museum Reach section of the Riverwalk runs through a series of flood tunnels near the Pearl District that most tourists completely overlook. Walk or kayak through these stretch and you get dramatic industrial-chic scenery, public murals commissioned specifically for the tunnel walls, and almost zero foot traffic — even on peak weekend afternoons when the tourist stretch near the Alamo is shoulder-to-shoulder packed.

The real insider move: rent a kayak from the Pearl and paddle toward downtown rather than away from it. You'll pass through the tunnel sections during golden hour when the light bounces off the water in a way that photographers obsess over but rarely find because they're busy waiting in line for a River Barge tour a mile south. The tunnel stretch is completely free to access on foot, and local cyclists use the adjacent paths as a quiet commuter shortcut — a dead giveaway that something worthwhile is hiding in plain sight.
